Peterson Shoes – a Rich History of Comfort Fit and Fashion in Anoka, MN

Dating back to 1861, when Peterson Shoes originated as Gillespie Shoes, the family owned and run store was the oldest in the state of Minnesota. In 1938, Mel and Estelle Peterson purchased the store with a connection already in place as Mel’s father, Andy had worked for Gillespie as a shoemaker. After Mel’s death, he and Estelle’s daughter, Sandra, along with her husband, Jack Purtle took over running the store. In 1982, their daughter Michelle joined when the store moved to its new location, where it continues to reside today at 209 East Main Street in Anoka, MN.

Now in its third generation, both Sandra and her daughter, Michelle are on-staff Certified Pedorthists who specialize in using footwear, shoe modifications and other pedorthic devices to solve problems in or related to the foot. These experienced professionals are trained in evaluating feet and fitting footwear. Peterson Shoes carries a wide variety of over-the-counter orthotics, and they also provide prescribed custom orthotics.

Keeping it all-in-the family, Sandra and Jack’s daughter-in-law, Dawn, who worked part-time in the late 80’s returned full time in 2013 where she serves as the store’s general manager, social media coordinator as well as working with customers. On event days you may spot Aubrey, Dawn’s granddaughter and Sandra’s great-granddaughter helping out. At age 6 she is the 5th generation in-training.
